Beef, it's what's for dinner!
In 9th grade, I did a job shadow for biology at my mom's work, Kulshan Veterinary Clinic. It was a great time because although I don't do too well in hospitals, I learned I could handle animal hospitals! There I was just hanging out watching the vets do their job when one of them invited me to watch a surgery on a cow. I thought, "sure, why not." I had no idea this image would come back to haunt me years later.
The vet doing the surgery was quite funny and joked around with me the whole time. As you may know cows have multiple stomachs...I think 5... but anyways, one of them had gotten twisted around so nothing could move through it. The vet cut open the cow and pulled the stomach out, untwisted the stomach, stitched up a part that had been worn by the twisting, and shoved it back in.
This scene flashed through my head tonight while we were at a soup restaurant with the class of adults we help practice English with twice a week. The dad of one of the guys in the class owns the restaurant, so we thought it would be fun to visit. After class tonight we piled into 2 cars and headed there. I don't know what I was thinking when I agreed to try cow stomach soup. They were all raving about it and said it was their favorite kind. I wanted to be a little adventurous and do something new. Bad idea this time. I can't quite describe what it tasted like to me - maybe burnt rubber with garbage mixed in? Then add the squishy chewy texture to that, blah!
Maybe you have to grow up eating it to like it. Dessert wasn't bad though. It was rice pudding with crushed walnuts on top. Then we had our usual cup of tea. Aaaah, life in Turkey.

Nice pics. I hope you wrote down the recipe for cow stomach soup cause I don't think many people in Washington get to taste that treat!
Enjoy Cappadocia and be sure to visit the cave hotels.

Jamie,
Is this the same girl that picked all the vegies out of her meals in this house? :) I'm SO proud of you for giving it a go! When you get back, you'll have to come for surprise soup at our house! :) I promise it'll be ok, though! xxoo Ridgely
